A crash hits the gap between two steps: ask which one got skipped.

A consumer does two things, the work and the commit, and a crash can fall between them. If the commit came first, the restart resumes past a record whose work never finished. If the work came first, the restart sees an old position and runs it again. Which step was lost tells you the guarantee.
