Guide: working as a Product Manager

Product managers decide what gets built next and why. Day to day that means talking with customers, turning messy feedback into a prioritised roadmap, writing specs that engineers and designers can act on, and checking after launch whether a feature actually changed user behaviour.

Core skills employers look for

  • Customer discovery interviews
  • Writing PRDs and user stories
  • Roadmap prioritisation
  • Product analytics and funnels
  • A/B test design and reading
  • Stakeholder alignment
  • Go-to-market coordination
  • Basic SQL for self-serve data

How to stand out when you apply

  • On your resume, describe each product you owned as problem, decision and outcome: what users struggled with, what you chose not to build, and which metric moved afterwards.
  • Write a short teardown of an app you use daily: who it serves, one friction point, a proposed fix and how you would measure success. Link it from your resume or portfolio.
  • Show you can pull your own numbers. A small SQL query or dashboard you built to answer a product question signals you will not wait on an analyst for every decision.
  • If you are moving in from engineering, design or support, frame past work around the user decisions you influenced rather than the tasks you completed.

What the interviews usually cover

Expect product sense exercises (design or improve a product for a given user), an execution round where you pick a success metric and diagnose a sudden drop in it, and a behavioural round on disagreements with engineering or leadership. Some teams add a take-home spec or an estimation question. Structure answers around user, problem, options, trade-offs and how you would measure the result.
