Listen to understand, then say it back so they can hear that you did.

Good listening has two halves. First you take the message in. Then you check, out loud, that what you took in matches what they meant. Silence alone does not prove understanding, and copying their sentences word for word shows only that you have a good memory, not that you grasped the point.

Read it once, then a question tests whether the trick stuck.
