OWASP Top 10 Tutorial

The most common web application risks, with vulnerable-versus-fixed code and a test plan

Intermediate4 lessonsabout 21 min of reading

This course is for developers who build or review web applications and APIs and want a practical grasp of the OWASP Top 10 (current edition). That list is a periodically revised, community-compiled summary of the most critical web application security risks. It is an awareness document, not a complete standard, and the exact names, numbering and groupings change between editions, so this course organises the material by risk theme instead of by list position.

You will learn what each theme looks like in code, why it happens, and what the fix looks like. The examples are deliberately small and runnable: Python with SQLite, so you can see a vulnerable query and a fixed one side by side. All of it is defensive. You will not find exploit chains or attack payload collections, only enough of the flawed pattern for you to recognise it in your own code review.

The four lessons move from the most common code-level problems to the surrounding system. First access control and injection. Then authentication, cryptography and configuration. Then components, design, server-side request forgery and logging. The last lesson turns the whole list into a review checklist and a test plan you can apply to an app of your own. Basic knowledge of HTTP, a programming language and SQL is assumed. If you are new to the field, start with Cybersecurity Fundamentals.
