AI Agents Tutorial
Build and reason about AI agents: loops, tools, memory, planning and guardrails
Intermediate4 lessonsabout 26 min of reading
This course is for developers who have called a language model and now want to build something that acts on its own: look things up, call APIs, and decide what to do next. You should be comfortable reading Python and know roughly what a language model does. If not, work through the Large Language Models and Prompt Engineering courses first.
The approach is vendor-neutral. Every example uses a plain Python function as a stand-in for the model, so the programs run offline and print the same output every time. That lets you study the parts that are really yours to design: the loop, the tool layer, memory and state, and the safety rails. Once those are clear, swapping in a real model from any provider is a small change.
The four lessons go from the core loop, to how tools are described and validated, to memory and planning, and finally to reliability: budgets, human approval, evaluation and the typical ways agent systems fail.
AI Agents lessons
- 1AI Agents Explained: The Observe, Decide, Act Loop (With Python)What an AI agent really is: a model inside an observe-decide-act loop. Build one in runnable Python and learn when a plain prompt or workflow is enough.7 min read
- 2AI Agent Tool Use: Function Calling, Schemas and Error HandlingHow AI agent tool use and function calling work: write tool schemas, validate model-generated arguments, and return errors the model can recover from.7 min read
- 3AI Agent Memory and Planning: Short-Term, Long-Term and StateHow AI agent memory and planning work: short-term context, long-term storage, plans that adapt, and when explicit planning is worth the extra cost.6 min read
- 4AI Agent Reliability: Guardrails, Budgets, Approvals and EvaluationMake AI agents reliable: enforce guardrails, step and cost budgets, human approval for risky actions, and test agents with repeatable evaluation cases.6 min read
